Clarify what must be yours
Start with the features and workflows that differentiate your product. Decide which parts need custom control and which can follow an established platform pattern.
Look beyond the first release: integrations, operational tooling and the ability to change the product later all affect the choice.
Map responsibilities
Ask who owns infrastructure, upgrades, security work, integrations and day-to-day support. A platform decision is also a decision about the work your team will operate.
Compare the time and effort of configuration with the effort of building and maintaining a custom component. Discuss ownership and commercial terms explicitly.
Test the decision against your roadmap
Take a small set of realistic future changes and ask how each approach would support them. A concrete roadmap is more useful than broad claims about flexibility.
